As I reflect back on this last week, I cannot help but notice how my son’s confidence has grown leaps and bounds in seven short days. It’s interesting to me that he can be unsure of himself in so many areas but it in no way affects his pursuit of the fairer sex. Oh, he has the usual self doubts all teenagers do but it doesn’t impede him in his quest for a love partner.
He’d be more than happy to tell you that he now has a girlfriend! And I can tell you it scared me half to death the night of their first date.
My son and his new girlfriend decided to make a movie the subject of their first official night out. Since neither of them drive, I did the honors. It was so cute watching them walk into the theatre, their arms linked and bright smiles on their faces. The first moment of my unrest came when picking them up after the movie. In a rush of excitement, I was enlightened to their activities (kissing through half the movie), opinions (how the movie ended), and plans (marriage and kids). Wait. Wait?! Marriage and kids???
The first few days of their courtship was spent on the phone for hours, time together at their transition school, more phone calls, and now the movie. How did that so quickly turn into marriage and kids? My husband and I have agreed to keep close watch on this relationship and do everything in our power to slow it down.
Well, it seems we can breathe easier now. The phone calls have decreased and there’s been no more talk of…um…you know. Seems the honeymoon is over. They’re still seeing each other but moving at a much slower pace.
I’m happy and grateful this week for the opportunities my son has been given to experience the same crazy highs and hopefully-not-too-low lows as other young adults. I’ve hoped and prayed his entire life that his challenges not prevent him from doing so. He’s maturing, growing in confidence and seeking independence. Even though he doesn’t always see it, he is very blessed, as are my husband and I for being entrusted with his care.
Have a Happy Friday and Weekend!
